Knee-high boots are one of the most-searched shoes in the UK every autumn, and for good reason. They keep your legs warm, they cover the awkward gap between a midi skirt and your ankle, and one good pair works with jeans, dresses and knitwear right through to spring.
The hard part is choosing. Here's how to narrow it down.
1. Start with the shape of the leg
The leg (or shaft) of the boot does most of the styling work.
- Riding boots have a straight, structured leg and a low heel. They're the classic choice with skinny jeans or leggings, and they look smart enough for the office. See Georgiana for a buckled riding style.
- Slouch boots have a soft leg that gathers around the calf. They feel relaxed and suit midi skirts and knit dresses. Try Sienna.
- Fold-over boots have a folded cuff at the top, which softens the line and adds a little texture. See Tamsin.
- Western and cowgirl boots bring pattern and personality. They're a strong choice if most of your wardrobe is plain denim and neutrals. See Dallas.
- Lace-up boots have a slightly vintage feel and add detail from ankle to knee. See Ramona.
2. Pick a heel you'll actually walk in
Be honest about your day. If you walk to the station, do the school run or stand at work, a flat or low block heel will get far more wear than a stiletto. Block heels spread your weight and feel steadier on wet pavements.
Save slim or high heels for evenings, and look for a pair you can sit in comfortably for a few hours.
3. Think about the sole for UK weather
A chunkier, ridged lug sole gives more grip on wet leaves and slippery pavements than a smooth, thin sole. If you'll wear your boots every day from October to March, it's worth the extra weight. Eloise and Beatrix both have lug soles.
Suede-effect finishes look soft and warm but can mark in heavy rain. A water-repellent spray made for suede, applied before you first wear them, helps. On very wet days, a smooth leather-look finish is easier to wipe clean.
4. Get the calf fit right
With knee-high boots, calf fit matters as much as foot size. Before you order:
- Measure around the widest part of your calf, ideally in the tights or jeans you'll wear with the boots.
- Check the product page for any shaft height or calf notes, and the size guide for your foot size.
- If your calves are on the fuller side, slouchy or stretch styles usually have more give than a structured riding boot.
For your foot size, our size guide recommends going up to the larger size if you're between sizes.
5. Choose a colour that works hardest
If this is your only pair, black goes with everything and hides rain marks. Brown and tan look softer with denim, camel coats and autumn knits. Statement colours and prints are the fun second pair.
How to wear knee-high boots
- With jeans: slim or straight-leg jeans tucked into riding or fold-over boots.
- With a midi skirt or dress: let the hem sit just over the top of the boot so no leg shows. Slouch boots are made for this.
- With a knit dress and tights: the easiest winter outfit there is. Add a long coat and you're done.
